Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act is commonly referred to as Proposition 65 Warning, Prop65, and P65. In California, the proposition was enacted as a ballot in 1986. The purpose is to protect the citizens of CA from drinking water contaminated with chemicals to cause cancer, birth defects or other reproductive harm. The act requires the state to update and maintain the list of chemicals on a yearly basis.

All businesses located in California or selling to a California resident must give an individual a clear and reasonable warning of chemicals known to the state to cause cancer birth defects or reproductive toxicity.

A warning of this type is also required for such commonly used products such as these: goods made of or containing leather, vinyl, foam, plastics and other synthetics; glassware, ceramics and tableware; batteries and/or products containing batteries; beauty and personal hygiene products (including first-aid kits and lotions); medicines, alcohol and even fish.
